| Chinese Medicine is the oldest form of recorded medicine and is used by 1/5 of the world's population. Over thousands of years, it has evolved into a complete medical system that can diagnose, treat, and prevent illness. It is a safe and effective way to treat a wide variety of conditions. The primary modalities of Chinese Medicine are Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. Acupuncture consists of inserting fine, sterile needles at specific points on the body in order to produce beneficial results. The most important of acupuncture's effects are restoring blood, nutrient, and vital air flow; restoring visceral and immune function; promoting physiological and autonomic balance (homeostasis); relieving pain, and promoting tissue healing. Chinese Medicine uses poetic metaphors from Chinese culture and the environment to describe the nature of homeostasis and the imbalance caused by disease. This terminology includes concepts such as , , ("chee"), blood, , and the five elements -- fire, earth, water, metal, wood. These complex, interrelated systems can become out of balance by situations such as stress, emotions, improper diet or poor nutrition, lack of exercise or too much exercise, over-working, extreme climates, or exposure to pathogenic microorganisms. Chinese terminology describes such disease mechanisms with metaphors such as wind, heat, dampness, fire, cold, or a combination of these affecting the body's homeostasis. Herbal Medicine is prescribed as an adjunct to Acupuncture care, and in some cases, such as with children, herbs can be used instead of Acupuncture. All treatment is geared towards restoring balance. Chinese medical practitioners who are trained in the United States attend 4 year full time graduate programs. These programs include Chinese medical theory, acupuncture theory and technique, herology, and Western medicine. Practitioners can become nationally certified, and many states offer licensure. In California, practitioners must pass a rigorous examination to become licensed. Call now for a a free consultation: (831) 655-9611 | |
